Interchange Pass-Through Model
PRO’s
- Processing fees are based on pass-through rates charged by Visa/ MasterCard
Reports provide extensive detail on all interchange categories. You, as the merchant, have the option to manage the various interchange levels in order to qualify your sales at the best interchange category
CON’s
- Visa/MasterCard Interchange contains over 500 line items. You will need to oversee and verify the ones that effect your business
- You are subject to fee increases as a result of changes imposed by the card issuing banks and the various card association. You are liable for any additional fees for wrong categorization
- Fees are based on a combination of percentages and per item fees
- Requires you to monitor rate changes and item category changes
- Statements are more difficult to review
- Sales are charged in different ways and listed in different sections of your statement:
Fees are broken down in confusing ways:
Interchange Fees- a percent and a per item fee
Assessments- a percent of sales
Authorization- a per item fee
Processing surcharge- a percent and/or a per item fee
Network Access- a per item fee
Brand Usage- a per item fee
Acquirer Fee- a per item fee
International Fees- a percent of foreign sales
All of these need to be added up to get your “all-in” processing cost making it almost impossible for a merchant to say with confidence “My rate is X.”
